Running Form

There is a big difference between running  and running correctly.

The following are 10 running-form principles based on biomechanics and running economy.

Head Position

Look straight ahead, not down or up.

Body Position

The body should have a slight forward lean from the heel to the shoulders.

Stride

Avoid a High or Long Stride.

Stride Turnover

Focus on a relatively fast turnover with ample hip/leg extension.

Foot Strike Position

The foot needs to strike the ground directly under or slightly ahead of the hips

Sweep Don't Pound

When the foot strikes the ground, it should already be moving in a sweeping motion toward the rear of the body.

Pelvis Rotation

The pelvis should rotate by 15-30 degrees.

Leg Extension

Leg extension behind the body should come from the hip, not the lumbar spine.

Arm Movement

Arm movement should primarily come from shoulders, not elbows.

Relax

Keep hands, shoulders, and face relaxed.
